Maidenhead United v Woking FA Cup 11/12 Squad – Who Would You Have In Your Side On Saturday?

By Jacob Greenwood

Mention Maidenhead United, York Road and the 2011/12 season to any Woking fan and memories will come flooding back. However, The Cards travelled to face The Magpies twice that season, with varying fortunes.

Cards fans will fondly remember Gez Sole scoring the only goal in Woking’s promotion-clinching win against Maidenhead and the celebrations that followed. In contrast, when the two sides met in the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round, the home side upset the Cardinals. Despite Jack King scoring a penalty for the visitors, Maidenhead went into half-time 4-1 up and saw out a goalless second half to run out comfortable winners.

Although Woking found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline that day, it was a strong side that was fielded. With that in mind, which players from the squad that day could Garry Hill do with now? We asked Everything Woking FC reporter David Richardson and Kool AM reporter Jacob Hutchinson who they would still have in their starting XI:

Woking’s side that faced Maidenhead in 2011:Aaron Howe, Josh Griffiths (Dale Binns), Derek Duncan,Giuseppe Sole, Mark Ricketts, Joe McNerney, Adam Doyle, Paris Cowan-Hall (Ola Sogbanmu), Jack King, Moses Ademola, Elvis Hammond, Jay Davies

Paris Cowan-Hall

DR: Quick, tricky and has an eye for goal. Whether a partnership would work between him and Holman we’ll probably never know but opposition defenders would certainly have a difficult time containing both. Another option to play on the wing too.
Mhead PCH
JH:  We desperately need a striker who is pacy, tricky and knows where the net is like PCH, he scored 20 goals in our promotion year and would certainly fit into our team now.

Moses Ademola (Moses Emmanuel)

DR: There were many mixed opinions about Moses during his time here. He scored some great goals and was capable of producing moments of magic. On the other hand, a fair few crosses went sailing over the KRE following a step-over. Despite not impressing against us earlier in the season, his current goals tally of 13 in the National League this season is highly impressive so you wouldn’t turn that down.

Jack King

DR: Would have been handy having him during Mark Ricketts injury spell this season. Good range of passing and has a fierce shot. A midfield three of King, Ricketts and Murtagh would be one of the best in the league.

JH: Jack was immense in the first half of that season, controlling the whole midfield and had a 100% penalty record until we lost to Maidenhead at home later on in the season! With Ricketts sitting deeper, Kieran and Jack would be perfect in racing up and down the slope at Maidenhead!

Alan Inns/Joe McNerney

DR: Despite not playing in the gutting 4-1 defeat at Maidenhead in the FA Cup, who would turn down having the Head on a Stick back!?

MHead Inns

JH: Both Joe McNerney and Alan Inns. At BSS level Joe had a mistake in him but has now he has moved in the Football league and with our defensive crisis we need him more than ever! He knows the ground well and would do a perfect job.
Inns’y- his partnership with Adam Doyle was a massive reason why we won promotion, solid, cleared every ball. Both Inns and Doyle contributed with crucial goals from set pieces. But I chose Inns due to his amazing turn of form after his loan spell at Borenham Wood! Remember he is just “a head on a stick”

Dale Binns

JH: Finally I would have Dale Binns in my team. We have players like Bruno and Daniel, but in our promotion season, Binns never put a foot wrong, scored goals consistently had a number of assists and I am sure was one of the first names on Garry’s team sheet. I was surprised we didn’t keep him on in the the BSP and I am sure he would do a great job on Saturday
