Woking will be looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday when Southport visit Kingfield.

The Sandgrounders have failed to win on the road yet this season and find themselves in the relegation-zone after 13 games. However, Garry Hill’s side be wary of the threat the team from Mersyside pose. Southport took all three points from Kingfield last season and Paul Carden’s men will be hoping to repeat that feat tomorrow.

We talked to Ben Highton to find out more about tomorrow’s visitors.

After a relegation fight last season, Southport ended up 6 points clear of the dropzone. How did you reflect on the season overall? 

Last season was memorable because of the trip to Derby County in the FA Cup and to hold them for 93 minutes was incredible. We had a scrappy season in the league, although had some brilliant away days, including Woking, and managed to stay up!

Gary Brabin left in January, did that affect the season?

Paul Carden, who was Brabin’s assistant manager, took over, so not too many things changed. Although, Brabin managed to get some good results so it was annoying for him to leave after such a short period of time for the second time.

What has Paul Carden done in his time at the club? Have there been many changes?

The stand out moment so far for Carden is probably signing 38-year-old Gary Jones, who was not so long ago playing for a Bradford side who beat Arsenal. Although, he is suspended for Saturday’s fixture. Carden also let last season’s top scorer Richard Brodie leave, which could be costly as we are the lowest scorers in the league.

What are your ambitions for the season? Is avoiding relegation the main priority?

We find ourselves in an awkward position already, so I do not expect more than a relegation scrap. Although, if we can string a few wins together then I hope to finish somewhere between around 14th to 16th and make an improvement on last season. Also, another good cup run would be nice.

Who will Woking have to look out for on Saturday?

Louis Almond has been very good in most of the games this season. He was key in our only win, and scored a beautiful equaliser late on at Guiseley last week. Also, Paul Rutherford may cause some problems for the Woking defence. He is very under-rated.

Finally, what is your score prediction?

I tipped Woking for 5^th place at the beginning of the season and we have been struggling, so I will say 3-1 to Woking.
